new book: Kommune by Youth

A new edition from Bracketpress...

We are pleased to announce the publication of the third collection of poetry, prose and illustrations by renowned record producer and musician Youth. Written over the past few months the main recurring theme is community: "Now more than ever, where we live increasingly in isolated and virtual worlds afraid of the unknown. Where fear rules and we are taught that stranger means danger. Where we are conditioned to distraction through the hollow promises of marketing bourgeoisie via consumerism and entertainment. Community becomes even more relevant and still more important. This is where we can share, help and learn from each other. Where we can regain our personal sovereignty and re-discover our divinity and humanity."
– from the introduction by Youth

The book is available to buy at venues hosting Killing Joke's 'Absolute Dissent' tour which is currently shedding much light and joy across many parts of Europe and will move on through America and Canada during December.
We have a limited number available for immediate dispatch through the web site.

Idler launch

"You are invited to a party at Rough Trade East this Friday, 7 May, to launch the new Idler. It starts at six sharp and will end at 8pm. Our DJ for the night is Mr Tim Burgess of The Charlatans, and there will be live performances from Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, Asbo Kid, Louis Eliot and Zodiac Youth. I will personally torture you with a rendition of “Big Rock Candy Mountains” on the ukulele, and Ian Bone and Ray Roughler-Jones will discuss Ray’s new book. You’ll be able to buy the new Idler at the shop. It is even more splendid than the previous one. We have raised our costs and have even employed a proper proof-reader. It contains a long interview with David Hockney, who has also contributed two sketches. There are essays on land reform, the 13th century, the commons, hedgehogs and the Dacha system, and pics from Stanley Donwood, Clifford Harper and Alice Smith. Our typesetter is Mr Christian Brett of Rochdale. Long live beauty, truth and William Morris! Hail William Blake and Samuel Johnson! Bow down before William Cobbett, Robin Hood, and all defenders of liberty! Anarchy and allotments! Cakes and ale!"  Tom Hodgkinson

The Concise Dictionary of Dress

Judith Clark commissioned me to contribute to a couple of installations... one of which was a nude Victorian collage image that was projected as a 'Pepper's Ghost' effect onto a Victorian dress, and the above image is another very small contribution to the many curiosities at this new exhibition:

The Concise Dictionary of Dress
Judith Clark and Adam Phillips
28 April - 27 June 2010
Blythe House
London W14 0QX

"The imposing monolith of Blythe House has since 1978 been the quiet repository for the V&A's reserve collections of furniture, ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, fashion and fine arts.

Located within its vast spaces, The Concise Dictionary of Dress begins as you navigate a turnstile, cross a corridor and take the industrial goods lift up to the top floor. A wrought iron staircase leads you out onto the roof towards an exposed cupola containing the first of a sequence of intriguing definitions in a walk-through dictionary of dress."

Carnaby Street's 50th Anniversary exhibition and book

We've just finished installing this exhibition for Carnaby street's 50th anniversary, it's located at 38 Carnaby Street and will be opening on February 26th until late March 2010.

The main installation of the exhibition is a 3D layered timeline. The collage wall illustrates a detailed history dating back to the 1600s to the present. It's an eclectic collection of photographs, ephemera, old prints, patterns and details that depict the spirit of Carnaby Street.

I was commissioned by Judith Clark and Amy de la Haye to work with them and John Morgan Studio to collage elements of the Street's history, produce a logo which adorns the front of the building and banners along Carnaby street and other promotional material. John Morgan studio produced a beautiful book of the exhibition, which is available to buy from the Carnaby Street website.

Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen

Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen has just been published by Hamish Hamilton

And Caustic Cover Critic.

It's a fantastical novel, well-recommended, read more reviews in the Guardian and Metro, and an interview with author Marilyn Chin on the Penguin website.

On Kindness, now available in paperback format

On Kindness by Adam Phillips and Barbara Taylor, published by Hamish Hamilton and now available as a paperback from all good book shops.

I did the cover illustration and Christian Brett did the elegant typesetting inside and out.

Clifford Harper

A revolutionary, revelatory weekend... I spent the afternoon with Clifford Harper, who I've commissioned to illustrate an article in the forthcoming issue of the Idler. His archive of work and the way he works is astounding, I thought all his work was woodcuts, but actually it’s all pen-drawn on CS10 HPS Illustration Board! A very fine anarchist.

Very pleased to meet you Clifford Harper.

the Idler: issue 43 'Back to the Land'

The latest Idler magazine has now gone into production and will be published on May 1st 2010.

Edited by Tom Hodgkinson, typeset and designed by Christian Brett, I did a few illustrations and commissioned this lot of artists: David Hockney, Stanley Donwood, Clifford Harper, Keiron Rhys Johnson, Joe Wilson, Sarah King, Matthew Green, Abigail Rorer.
